Why is it important that you understand how weak Germany’s government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz is, and how the chancellor’s conduct has contributed to a strong dissatisfaction of the German people with him and his divided coalition? What did Herr Scholz do (or not do) which led to this reaction? And how can one explain, among many other things, his repeated “lack of instinct” in respect to the scandal with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Germany’s continued financial support of the Palestinian Authority; and Scholz’s “lack of memory,” when being accused of having collaborated, as local mayor, with a Bank in Germany to engage in tax evasion? Is Germany’s government on its way out?

We are presently observing a huge political scandal in Germany with terrible prophetic consequences. Suddenly, the very survival of Germany’s “established” mainstream parties is in jeopardy, while political candidates are fighting for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s replacement. Europe is waiting for a new and more decisive German leadership. But do they know what they wish for?

We are discussing the ongoing desperate attempts by Theresa May to convince the British parliament to adopt her Brexit deal on Tuesday (December 11) as well as further meetings of the EU on Thursday, December 13. We are also addressing the surprise but slim victory of Annegret Kramp-Karrenberger (AKK) in Germany, replacing Angela Merkel as leader of the CDU, and the difficult task ahead of her to unify a deeply divided party. While many commentators feel now that Angela Merkel could remain Chancellor until 2021, this is rather doubtful. Who will succeed Merkel?
